M.Sc. Degree Course

Prospective students wishing to register for the M.Sc. degree course are advised to consult the regulations for this course which may be obtained from the Faculty Office (Master of Science – M.Sc. Degree Course Regulations, 1999).

The Department of Biology will be offering prospective students in possession of the degree of the B.Sc. (Hons) a course of studies leading to an M.Sc. degree through research only (Dissertation Mode of Study). The course shall normally extend over a period of twelve calendar months of full-time study or the equivalent in part-time study.

The Faculty Board will appoint a Panel of Supervision (which would include the supervisor) for each student. This panel shall follow, as it deems fit, the progress of the student through the course. Students will be required to report to their supervisors as requested.

Prospective students who are eligible for this course will be accepted only if a full-time member of staff of the Department will be willing to act as their supervisor.

Applications must include a provisional title for the dissertation, a 300-word proposal and a supporting statement by a member of the Department who has agreed to supervise the research project.

The student will be required to write a dissertation based on work of an advanced nature performed during the course, and to present the findings and conclusions in a scholarly manner, to which 28 credits are assigned. The student will also be required to defend his/her work during a viva-voce examination.

He/she will also be assigned a seminar, to which 2 credits shall be assigned. This will usually involve a literature review of a topic selected for the student by the Panel of Supervision. The student will then make an oral presentation to an audience generally consisting of members of the faculty and students. He/she will be required to answer questions posed by the audience and shall previously have submitted an abstract describing the content of the seminar.

Students who are in possession of the B.Sc. ordinary degree (or equivalent) may be allowed to register for the M.Sc. degree course only after successfully completing a Preparatory Course of higher level-study units.
