TThe Department of Banking and Finance is an integral part of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy (FEMA) of the University of Malta. The Department offers courses leading to the degree of Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) with a specialisation in Banking and Finance, and also provides lecturing input on the Chartered Institute of Bankers (Malta Centre) professional qualification.
Members of the department also lecture on the MA in Economics postgraduate degree programme run by the Economics Department. The Department also collaborates with other departments within FEMA as well as with the Faculty of Laws in terms of the provision of lecturing input on the MA degree in Financial Services offered by the latter faculty. In collaboration with other departments within FEMA, the Banking and Finance department assists in the organization of the Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com.) degree. This is a three-year course, for which students take two major areas of study.
The department comprises three full-time academic staff members and these are complemented by a number of visiting, and part-time lecturers. Lecturers undertake research in diverse areas, and contribute regularly to conference programmes and workshops in banking and finance organised by the Islands and Small States Institute of the University's Foundation for International Studies. The Department has a number of distinguished UK academics and professors among its visiting lecturing staff. They regularly visit the University and lecture on selected study units, both at Honours level as well as in the third year of the ordinary degree course. Among the overseas academics registered as Visiting Professors and Lecturers with the Department of Banking and Finance are included Professor E.P.M Gardner who holds the Bank of Valletta Chair of International Banking and Finance at the Malta University. Also included within the cohort of visiting academic staff is Professor Michael Bowe from the University of Manchester.
