About the Course


 


Introduction

 

With effect from October 2001, the University of Malta, with the support of the Ministry of Tourism, has started offering a B.A. (Hons.) in Tourism Studies.

 

The main objective of this course is to provide a comprehensive knowledge of the local and international dimensions of tourism and to equip students with skills to critically analyse the tourism industry and its impact on society, environment and the economy.

 

The programme extends over a period of four years and is based on the following five key areas:

 

1.                Management

2.                Economics

3.                Social and Environmental Studies

4.                Applied Tourism I & II

 

The B.A. (Hons.) Tourism Studies is intended for candidates who are in possession of the general entry requirements of the University of Malta who would like to know more about this important sector of contemporary economy and society.  Students who have successfully completed part I of the course (Years 1,II & III) become eligible for the award of the B.A. Tourism Studies .  Alternatively, provided their results are up tot the required standard,they may proceed to Year IV of the programme which leads to the B.A. (Hons.) Tourism Studies. 

 

The course is sub-divided into a series of study units to each of which a number of credits are assigned.  Students are required to take a minimum of 24 credits per year.  At the end of the third and fourth years, students must satisfy the requirements of Part I and Part II examinations each of which consists of five synoptic papers. 

 

Students who are in possession of the Diploma in Hotel Administration awarded by the Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS), may be admitted to Year III of the programme.  On successful completion of this, together with selected study units from years I and II and the Part I examination, they may proceed to Part II which leads to the B.A. (Hons.) Tourism Studies.

 

 

Course Administration

 

The Degree programme is being offered by the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy (FEMA) and is run by a Board of Studies made up of Faculty members, and representatives of the Ministry of Tourism and the Malta Tourism Authority.

The administrative secretarial duties of this course are carried out by Ms Marisa Rizzo.

 

The Board is responsible for matters pertaining to the academic content as well as the running of the degree course.

 

There are currently 43 students registered in Year I of the programme and 45 in year II..  In addition 13 students who are in possession of the ITS Diploma in Hotel Administration registered for Year III of the course and 10 students in year IV of the course
