About the Institute

The concept of tertiary agricultural education in Malta was first mooted by Dr Alessandro Bozzini of the Food and Agriculture Organization who visited Malta in 1988 together with other FAO experts to review and to report on the state of Maltese Agriculture and Fisheries at the request of the Maltese Government. Dr Bozzini suggested the possibility of launching agricultural course at the University of Malta (a 400 years old Institution) not only to provide for the local training of a larger number of agricultural officers, but also to improve the image of agriculture which, the public in Malta, had always associated with the lowest levels of education. With the support of the then Director of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Rector of the University who both felt that tertiary agricultural education was a concept whose time had come, the Institute of Agriculture was born.

Institute 1996The Institute of Agriculture was established within the University of Malta in February 1993 by Legal Notice 20 of 1993. The first university course was launched in October 1993; this was the Diploma in Agriculture course intended for sons and daughters of farmers. A M.Sc. in Agricultural Sciences was introduced in 1995 for graduates in Chemistry and Biology followed by a M.Sc. in Agricultural and Veterinary Pharmacy for graduates in Pharmacy. The latter is the only degree of its kind in the world and has already attracted various graduatesInstitute 2003 from overseas. Alongside these, the Institute also offers a M.Phil and Ph.D. in Agriculture. In February 2004 a new Diploma course commenced entitled Diploma in Water Operations Management. At present plans are being drawn up for a three-year course leading to the Bachelor degree in agro-ecosystems.
