POSTGRADUATE
COURSES:
The Master of Science in Agricultural &
Veterinary Pharmacy is one-year full-time or two-year
part-time evening postgraduate course open to
graduates in Pharmacy. This M.Sc. programme consists
of 20-credit course work and the submission of a
dissertation of 20000-30000 words based on research
work on an approved topic. Examinations are
held in June at the end of the course work. The
present course started in October 2002 and is due to
start again in October 2004.
The Master of Science in Agricultural
Sciences is two-year full-time or three-year
part-time evening postgraduate course open to
graduates in Biology and Chemistry. This M.Sc.
programme consists of 40-credit course work and the
submission of a dissertation of 30000-35000 words
based on research work on an approved topic.
Examinations are held in June at the end of the
course work in the second year. The course for the
degree of M.Sc. in Agricultural Sciences starts
every year.
UNDERGRADUATE
COURSES:
B.Sc. in
Mediterranean Agro-ecosystems Management
SPECIAL CREDIT:
A special study option that enables
undergraduate students in agriculture or related
sciences to undertake specific projects. Students
will carry out independent research or participate in
on-going experimental work, prepare a written report
and make a presentation of the research plan and
preliminary results. The Study Unit will reinforce
the depth of understanding of a particular component
of the agriculture and food system by providing
instruction and practical experience in planning and
reporting of research. Students will also be provided
with an opportunity to integrate communication
skills. The topic of study will be determined in
consultation with an IOA faculty member and the
individual student. Students are responsible for
making appropriate arrangements to confirm funding
prior to registration for the course.

CERTIFICATE/DIPLOMA:
Diploma in Rural Entrepreneurship is
offered by the Institute of Agriculture jointly with the FACULTY OF
ECONOMICS MANAGEMENT & ACCOUNTANCY. This course will be offered on a part time basis
at the University Malta Campus and
at the University Gozo Centre. It
will be spread over two years. Students will be expected to obtain
all the compulsory subjects.

The Diploma in Water Operations
Management is a one-year full-time, 60 ECTS credit,
evening course open to students.... . The first year
basically deals with Water production,
distribution, treatment, use and conservation, while
the second year is based on a selection of one of
three streams dealing with water management, sewage
and water use in agriculture. In the second year, the
students are expected to carry out work in industry
and present a long essay of about 8,000 to 9,000
words.
The Diploma in Agriculture is a
two-year full-time, 120 ECTS credit, day course open
to students who possess six passes at Secondary
Education Certificate level, including Maltese,
English Language, Mathematics and a science subject
at grade 5 or better. In the first year (the
Preparatory Course) the students are considered as
probationary but they become regular students in the
second year after the successful completion of the
first year. Direct entry into the second year
is open to those students with normal university
entry qualifications and advanced levels in Chemistry
and Biology. The first year Preparatory Course
consists of study units to which 52 credits are
assigned in five modules (Chemistry, Biology,
Biotechnology, Crop Science and Animal Science), and
of Agricultural Practice carried on two days a week
and to which 8 credits are assigned; the second year
consists of study units to which 52 credits are
assigned in the following modules: Animal Production,
Crop Production, Soil Science, Agricultural Economics
& Business and Agricultural Engineering, and of
Agricultural Practice on a chosen subject area
leading to a project report of 5000 words on an
approved topic to which 8 credits are assigned.
The course starts in alternate years and a new one is
due to start in October 2005.
Dissertation Guidelines
The
Certificate in Agriculture is one year, part-time,
15-credit course, provided as an evening course
in Malta and as a weekend course in Gozo. Seven hours
of tuition are given every week and the course is
based on the block credit system (i.e. a
credit is covered in two subsequent weeks followed by
an assessment). Two study units involving a total of
7 credits are covered in each semester and one study
unit in Agricultural Practice evaluated as one credit
involves practical experience on an approved farm
during the summer months under appropriate
supervision.
