Special libraries are service units satisfying the information requirements of specific organisations, but sharing a number of general characteristics. The unit aims to give an introduction to the nature, purposes and functions of special libraries, the techniques that are practised within them, and the automated systems that support their operations. The Maltese scene is contrasted with theory and with practice abroad.
